The University of Exeter: What You Need to Know
First of all, it’s ‘Exetah’. The monopoly of Surrey students have left their mark and depending on your hall (Holland Hall, I’m looking at you), it’s true your life at Exeter can feel a little Made In Chelsea feel. However, that’s not to say it has to, Exeter has 21,000 students and is much more mixed than The Tab would let you believe, so your Exeter experience is really what you make it.
At all universities societies are a huge part of life, but at Exeter sports societies reign over all. In 2016 the university was named the The Times and Sunday Times Sports University of the year and it certainly lives up to this promise. Whether you’re a rugby pro or a korfball beginner, Exeter has it all – and don’t the teams let you know it! Even if you only join a sport for the legendary Wednesday socials or just attend the abundant varsities to spot the hot players, sport will definitely be part of your life at Exeter.
Walk through campus and you’ll be lucky to hear only one mention of ‘Bleed Green’. Exeter students are incredibly patriotic towards our university, with the dark green stash almost mandatorily worn round campus. Bump into a fellow Exeter student in the outside world and you’re automatically comrades; from my experience this sense of community is unparalleled by any other university.
Finally, Exeter has two main ‘fun facts’ both of which you will become accustomed to telling and being told. First, we apparently have more trees than people on campus, and second, JK Rowling went to Exeter! The literary queen lived in Duryard Hall, and according to campus myth based the Gryffindor common room on Mardon Hall and drew inspiration for the Leaky Cauldron from the infamous Firehouse. The original Diagon Alley (Gandy Street) now hosts a Harry Potter themed bar, and JK’s legacy has even reached the sports societies with the university’s own Quidditch team.
So, whether you’re trotting off every Saturday to play polo, or raging round campus with Nerf Soc, Exeter really does have something to suit everyone!
