Williams is the quintessential liberal arts college – a small, secluded, beautiful campus in Massachusetts offering high quality education to its 2,000 or so undergraduate students. Founded in the late 1700s, it is also one of the oldest institutions for higher education in the country. Teaching is organised in three main academic branches, Languages & Arts, Social Sciences, and Science & Mathematics, and features Oxford-style small group tutorials. Williams makes up a third of the “Little Three” elite liberal arts colleges (together with Amherst and Wesleyan), which compete against each other in athletics.
Much like the other elite liberal arts colleges, Williams is not featured on international university rankings due to it exclusively offering undergraduate programmes. Although arguably one of the best undergraduate schools in the world, it does not fill all the criteria to feature on the university rankings lists.
